Media briefing: IMF donor nations will be made aware of SA government’s dangerous policy intentions – IRR

9 June 2020 - The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) will this week be writing an open letter to some of the largest donor nations to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to urge them, in considering any appeal for relief from South Africa, to bear in mind the implications of government policy, its damaging effects on the economy and on the country’s prospects of creating a stable, fair and prosperous future.

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) will this week be writing an open letter to some of the largest donor nations to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to urge them, in considering any appeal for relief from South Africa, to bear in mind the implications of government policy, its damaging effects on the economy and on the country’s prospects of creating a stable, fair and prosperous future.
 
The letters will make clear to donor nations and the IMF more broadly the state and likely trajectory of government policy in South Africa, and how, in light of the IMF’s values and mission, this should influence any consideration of IMF relief and associated conditions.
 
More details on this international awareness initiative will be provided by the IRR’s Deputy Head of Policy Research, Hermann Pretorius, in an online media briefing tomorrow, 10 June, at 10am.
