Members of the media and the research community are cordially invited to the online launch of the Institute of Race Relations’ 2023 South Africa Survey, to be held on 31 May at 10h00.

The Survey, first published in the 1940s, and released annually ever since, is a staple of South Africa’s information environment. The 2023 edition comes in at 770 pages, covering a comprehensive range of subjects – from the country’s demographic makeup, to the state of the economy, to education, healthcare, crime and security.

Predominantly a compendium of statistics, the Survey presents not only a snapshot of the country in the present, but shows numerous time data sets, allowing the reader to trace changes – progress and decline – over time. It also includes international comparisons to show how South Africa stacks up against its peers.

The launch event will feature a brief history of the Survey (known as the Survey of Race Relations up to 1984, thereafter the Race Relations Survey up to 1996, and up to present the South Africa Survey) by Martin van Staden, an analysis of some of the 2023 data about employment and crime by analysts Terence Corrigan and Makone Maja, followed by a Q&A session.

Click here to register and have the opportunity to put forward questions to the panel. Attendance is limited to 250 people. The broadcast will be simulcasted live on the IRR’s LinkedIn page.
